Day Five Race One

Guinness Handicap Hurdle 2011 (2m 2f) - Magic start for Weld

Dermot Weld notched up his 12th winner of the Galway Festival as Rainforest Magic breezed to success in the opener on day five of the extravaganza.  A winner here on the flat earlier in the week the four-year-old never looked in any trouble and when Par Five was brought down early on it was just a matter of jumping the obstacles.

Robbie McNamara pushed him clear three furlongs from home and he sauntered clear from Clonsilla Faith to win by four-and-a-half lengths.

2009 Result

It was the reserve horse, Back Me Up, trained by Christie Roche and ridden by son Paul who won this dour, punishing race with odds of 11/1. He was always prominent but was the one with the most in the tank after they jumped the last. He was too strong on the run in and won by 5 lengths from the tired Rainbow Dash with Sharadi back in third. It was the first 2009 Festival winner for well known owner JP McManus.
