Day Six Race Four

Ladbrokes Handicap 2011 (7f) - Rock Critic looking for double at festival

Rock Critic was an emphatic winner of the Guinness Time Handicap earlier in the week and Dermot Weld's raider will look to notch a second Galway Festival success in the Ladbrokes Handicap.

The six-year-old will have to carry a 5lb penalty for that success, but the ease he won on Thursday showed he surely can defy that and be thereabouts in this seven furlong contest.

2009 Result

Despite playing up at the start odds on favourite Black Quartz did the business at the end due mainly to the briliance of Johnny Murtagh who almsot carried him across the line after a huge battle up the run in with the second horse, Corcovada. Murtagh proved what an outstanding jockey he is both at the start and the finish of the race and trainer Aidan O'Brien should be extra thankful to his lead jockey's effort, as should the punters. Fammi Sognare ran on to be third overtaking the disappointing Jim Bolger horse Eireannach.

  • 1st Black Quartz, A O'Brien, J Murtagh, 4/5 Fav
  • 2nd Corcovada, E Harty, N McCullogh, 10/1
  • 3rd Fammi Sognare, A Mullins, D Mullins 6/1
