Day Three Race Six

Tote Daily Double Handicap 2011 (1m 100y) - Duke continues Weld dominance

Maunsells Duke defied a high draw to comfortably win the Tote Daily Double Handicap for Ballybrit supremo Dermot Weld.  It marks Weld's sixth winner of this year's Galway Festival and his mount never looked in any danger turning for home.

Smullen stalked round the outside of the field and duly sent the four-year-old clear to win by 3 lengths from Hot Sand, who was a gallant second.

The Jessica Harrington trained Gimli’s Rock was the winner of this tightly fought contest and in so doing provided his trainer with her third win of the Festival. Gimli’s Rock along with Izagonawin and Tatacoa ran clear of the field in the final furlong but despite drifting badly to his left, it was Gimlli’s Rock who held on the strongest to win by a short head from Izagonawin

Tatacoa can consider himself unlucky as he seemed to be squeezed out by the first two home and had to be content with third.

  • 1st Gimli’s Rock, J Harrington, K Latham, 14/1
  • 2nd Izagonawin, T Stack, W Lee, 6/1
  • 3rd Tatacoa, T O’Mara, V Lincoln, 10/1
